Mesharbia is a lattice element usually made of wood, used in building openings, windows or walls. The mashrabiya is a characteristic architectural element of Islamic architecture found in most Arab countries, and in the traditional houses of Cairo in particular, and is used mainly in the women’s rooms, which serves as a partition between the window and the street in order to preserve their modesty.
The mashrabiya was developed to address the differences in space between the inside and outside of the house, allowing light to filter into the house and creating a decorative partition. Today the Mashrabiya is a decorative architectural element which is used mainly as an ornamental item, but sometimes as its primary purpose but without the cultural aspects.
The Mashrabiya can be placed as a divider between the spaces of the house, as a picture on walls, as a railing for stairs, interior windows or ventilation openings.
The production of the wooden mashrabiya is done by a CNC machine and uses materials such as highly compressed MDF or solid wood, the process of making the mashrabiya also of course requires the handiwork of a professional and skilled carpenter in order to give a maximum finish.
